The EU Commissioner for European Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations, Johannes Hahn, said on Tuesday he expected state leaders and political actors in Macedonia to unite around national interests. As he added, he received guarantees for that from VMRO-DPMNE leader and former PM Nikola Gruevski. As regards the name issue, Hahn stated that he didn’t have competence to intervene, but added that the ideal solution would arise from the dialogue between the two sides. It’s also good that there is a deal with Bulgaria that will be ratified in Parliament by the end of 2017, the Commissioner noted. All laws concerning judiciary, intelligence and public administration should be adopted, which is key when it comes getting a positive recommendation from the EU, Hahn, who met civil society sector representatives, reiterated. In his view, the hope is that that will happen in February, while it is also hoped that the negotiations will start the following year.
