On Wednesday, UN mediator Matthew Nimetz will present a concrete proposal for a resolution to the name issue that will not be new, but rather a modified version of the proposals already put on the table. “I can’t tell you my ideas now, but we have negotiated for over 20 years and most of the ideas have already been put on the table,” he says in an interview with Greek TV station ERT. As he adds, there is nothing completely new. “There is no magic solution. We know the viewpoints of Skopje and Athens,” the mediator underlines. The elements, according to him, are part of proposals that have been reviewed. Commenting on the name issue, Russian FM Sergey Lavrov explains that the name issue has been activated after the U.S. decision that Macedonia should join NATO. As he adds, Greece is already part of the Alliance and concessions are expected of Macedonia. According to Lavrov, Russia will recognise any name agreed on by the two sides if that is accepted by institutions in Macedonia.
