Greek President: Name that Respects Law and History is Acceptable

One day ahead of the continuation of name talks between Macedonian and Greece negotiators with UN Mediator Matthew Nimetz Greek President Prokopis Pavlopoulos said Greece would support Macedonia’s aspirations for EU and NATO admission only if the country opts for a name that would respect history and borders and that would not incite irredentism. “This name must respect the international law and the acquis; to be a name that respects the entire history rather than the false history and secondly not to be tendentious. We cannot pick a name that will directly or indirectly call for change of borders,” the Greek President stated, also warning it may not stir irredentism of any sort. Mediator Nimetz says there is a positive momentum in both Skopje and Athens for resolution of the long standing spat and citizens are prepared to hear certain proposals as solutions.
